Earth Sciences New Zealand’s Seasonal Climate Outlook for July to September forecasts a wetter and warmer second half of 2025 for the Bay.
With orange heavy rain warnings already in place, Earth Sciences New Zealand (formerly NIWA) principal scientist and meteorologist Chris Brandolino says tropical weather systems are likely to dominate the coming months.
“There is a high likelihood for tropical and sub-tropical influences, and low-pressure systems, to affect the country over the next three months,” he said. “This could lead to significant rainfall and an increased risk of flooding.”
According to the data, overall rainfall across July, August, and September is expected to be above average, with seasonal air temperatures also tracking higher than normal.
“While cold snaps and frost will occur, they are expected to be less frequent than usual,” Brandolino added.
Residents are being urged to prepare by clearing drains and gutters, avoiding low-lying areas, driving to the conditions (or staying off the roads altogether), and checking in on neighbours and pets.
Authorities warn of an increased risk of surface flooding, rising streams, slips, and hazardous driving conditions.
