According to the latest NIWA Climate Database, Whakatāne recorded 197 hours of sunshine last month, 35 hours more than 2021 Sunshine Hours winner, New Plymouth.
Whakatāne's high August hours compares to the 133 hours of sun recorded in July.
Whakatāne now sits 26 hours behind New Plymouth, who saw 162 hours of sunshine last month.
New Plymouth still remains in first place with 1701 hours of sunshine year to date. Whakatāne follows closely behind with 1675 hours.
Kawerau recorded 157 hours last month, is 303 hours behind New Plymouth which places the town as 9th on the leader board.
