A list of core council services published by the Government has been labelled "bizarre" by Whakatāne District Councilor Nándor Tanczos who notes that many of the services that councils are required to provide are missing from the list.
The Government published the list as part of their Local Government (System Improvements) Amendment Bill which aims to ease the cost of council rates by focusing on the basics rather than nice-to-haves.
But Tanczos says a number of key services are absent from the list. The services that have been left off include cemeteries, public toilets, animal control, liquor licenses, and consents.
Tanczos said that these are functions insisted upon by the Government for councils to manage.
Services which the Government are asking local authorities to prioritise as part of the bill include network infrastructure, public transport, waste management, civil defence, libraries, museums, reserves and other recreational facilities.
