A 47-year-old man is set to appear in the Whakatāne District Court on January 6, charged with arson and assault on a person in a family relationship.
Emergency services attended the incident on Monday, around 9:45pm.
Five fire trucks and one support vehicle from Ōhope, Whakatāne, Edgecumbe, and Kawerau responded.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand says the fire was out by 11:20pm, and three crews stayed until after 1:00am to ensure all hotspots were extinguished.
A Police spokesperson says no one was inside the house at the time of the fire.
There is a scene guard in place, and a fire investigator will remain on site for the rest of the day.
