Whakatāne District Council said the broken pipe is now fixed, but the water team are refilling the the mains, and the reservoir.
Team Leader Water and Wastewater Treatment Neal Yeates said a water truck will be parked outside Tāneatua School until 5pm "for anyone who needs to fill their own containers."
Although the water did not fully run out, " residents may have noticed very low water pressure," as the break impacted residential water supply.
The water pressure should return by this evening.
The water may initially appear cloudy from the air in the pipes, but it it is still safe to drink "and if left to sit, it will clear."
"The team will keep topping up the reservoir overnight, and by morning the tank should be sitting at around 60 percent capacity and continuing to rise," he said.
He said those experiencing issues should call Customer Services on 07 306 0500.
