Whakatāne District Council is encouraging eligible ratepayers to apply for a rates rebate before applications close on June 30, highlighting recent changes to the Government's rebate scheme that could make more households eligible for financial assistance.
Eligible households can receive a rates rebate of up to $805, helping to ease the burden of rising living costs.
Rates Manager Justin McGeough said the Council wants to ensure residents are aware of the support available, particularly as many families and older people continue to face financial pressures.
"We know many families and older residents across our district are finding it tough in the current economic climate," McGeough said.
"The rates rebate scheme is designed to provide financial relief, and we encourage anyone who thinks they may be eligible to check and apply."
Changes announced as part of Budget 2025 have increased the income thresholds for the rates rebate scheme.
From July 1, 2025, SuperGold cardholders with a household income of up to $45,000 may qualify for assistance, while the threshold for non-cardholders has risen to $32,210.
McGeough said the adjustments mean more residents could be eligible than in previous years.
"These changes mean more people may qualify than before. Even if you've never been eligible previously, it's worth taking a few minutes to check," he said.
The Council has already received more than 1,400 applications for the current rebate year but believes a significant number of eligible residents have yet to apply.
Applications for the current rates rebate year close on Tuesday, June 30.
