Average speed safety cameras are now operating on State Highway 2 west of Matatā near Whakatāne, with transport officials warning motorists they can expect fines if they travel too quickly between the devices.

The cameras work by measuring the time it takes vehicles to travel between two fixed points along the highway.

If a driver’s average speed over that distance exceeds the posted limit, an infringement notice may be issued.

New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) said the system was designed to reduce speeding and lower the risk of serious and fatal crashes on the stretch of road.

“Exceeding the speed limit is illegal,” NZTA said.

“Our aim is to reduce the number of people travelling over the speed limit and lessen the likelihood of a serious or fatal crash.”

The agency said signs had been installed ahead of the cameras to alert drivers and give them time to check their speed.

Drivers travelling at or below the speed limit would not be fined, NZTA said.
