Ōpōtiki District Council say a boil water notice is in place for the Te Kaha water supply.
The council said water must be boiled for at least three minutes before using it for drinking, brushing teeth, food prep, including washing produce, making ice or drinks, and baby formula.
It said recent testing shows the water may not be safe to drink, with "possible bacteria like E coli."
The notice is in place until testing shows the water is safe, and it affects only those on the Te Kaha water supply.
"People on tank water or separate supplies are not affected."
