Around 4:30 am, the volunteer fire brigade's siren sounded due to a “technical fault with the paging system.”
Ōhope Volunteer Fire Brigade said the siren is used as a backup system to alert volunteers of a callout.
“Normally, the siren is silenced between 8pm and 8am,” it said.
“We are a volunteer brigade, so the fire station is unmanned.”
The brigade is reminding the community that the fire sirens are no longer used to alert the public to a tsunami.
