Following Cyclone Vaianu, NZTA cancelled the scheduled qauterly maintenance work for Pekatahi Bridge and it said crews are still working to set a new date.
NZTA said following the Cyclone, Pekatahi Bridge maintenance was cancelled due to uncertainty around the scale of regional impacts.
"The decision was made to keep the bridge open as it is a critical lifeline route," it said.
The cyclone response also disrupted key staff, meaning a revised maintenance plan is still being developed.
"We expect to confirm the maintenance strategy and the timing for these works at the end of the week."
While a time has not been confirmed, NZTA said the detour route via Landing Road Bridge, is managed by Whakatāne District Council and "remains unavailable for approximately one month."
Until work can be completed, NZTA crews will continue with weekly inspections and complete minor repairs.
This includes removing broken boards, refixing or screwing down loose boards as required, and reporting any safety concerns immediately.
NZTA said it acknowledges community concerns and will provide an update once maintenance dates are confirmed.
