St John says it was notified of the incident around 3:03pm yesterday.
One ambulance, one helicopter, one rapid response unit, and an operations manager responded to the incident, and the patient was airlifted to Whakatāne hospital.
This is the second water-related incident across the Bay of Plenty in the last week.
Police says they received reports of a man who hadn't returned from a swim at Lake Tikitapu on Friday, 9 January.
It says the man's body was located on Saturday, 10 January, just after 1am.
Police are reminding the public of the importance of water safety during the summer.
Eastern District Commander, Superintendent Jeanette Park, says it's important to look after those around you.
“We’re asking everybody to be aware of their surroundings and capabilities while participating in water-related activities."
