An update on access to Gisborne through State Highway 2 Waioweka Gorge is expected tomorrow.
NZTA said a milestone has been reached with a specialised digger operating around 80 metres above the road.
The work within a narrow valley above the major Goldsmith slip site will unblock a stream, clearing debris.
"Restoring the stream’s pathway and clearing debris is a critical step in reducing pressure on the slope and lowering the risk of further land movement." NZTA said.
The removal of debris will allow water to flow naturally, "improving the site’s long term stability and resilience during heavy rain events," it said.
NZTA said based off progress this week, a decision will be made tomorrow on if the next stage of road access will begin.
Currently Gisborne bound convoys are operating at 7:00am, 12:30pm, and 6:30pm, with Ōpōtiki bound convoys half an hour later.
The proposed approach would see the road open at set time for general traffic "with controlled hourly releases outside these windows to safely manage queue build ups," it said.
The road would remain closed at night.
Delays would vary depending on travel timing, with hourly release wait times being longer.
"Traffic management will be actively monitored and adjusted as needed to maintain safety, support construction progress, and minimise impacts on road users," it said.
Changes will be one step closer to normal two way traffic it said.
NZTA continue to encourage motorists to use the convoys for essential travel only and say drivers should be prepared for the road to close at short notice if weather conditions or risk assessments change.
