MetService says afternoon and evening thunderstorms are expected for inland parts of the Bay of Plenty, east of Rotorua.
It says the thunderstorms may become severe, and localised downpours could see rainfall rates of 25mm to 40mm per hour.
This intense rain may cause slips, surface and/or flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas such as streams, rivers, or narrow valleys, says MetService.
Bay of Plenty Civil Defence says a severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms, and people in the region should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions.
It says the public should monitor MetService for possible severe thunderstorm warnings.
"If you hear distant thunder or see a flash of light, get indoors immediately."
Driving conditions will be hazardous with poor visibility in heavy rain, so drivers are urged to drive according to the conditions.
The watch will be in place from 1pm to 9pm today.
Other areas included in the thunderstorm watch are eastern Taupo, inland Gisborne, and the Wairoa District.
