Emergency services were called to the Whakatane Bridge this afternoon after a mud fight between children ended with a girl needing to be rescued from the base of the bridge. A witness said an 11 year-old girl had been struck by a projectile during the mud fight and had then swam out to the bridge and sat herself on the base of one of the bridge's structural supports.
Police, Saint John and Fire and Emergency New Zealand crews were all present at the scene.
A coastguard boat also arrived to transport the girl to shore.
When asked about the large number of response personnel present, a FENZ responder commented, "It's better to have too much than not enough".
