GNS Science has lowered the Volcanic Alert Level for Whakaari/White Island from Level 3 to Level 2, following observations that the recent eruptive activity has decreased.

The alert level was originally raised to Level 3 in mid-April due to increased volcanic unrest. However, over the past four weeks, data from GeoNet cameras in the Bay of Plenty, satellite imagery, and a monitoring flight on Monday confirmed there have been no further ash emissions or signs of ongoing eruption.

MetService has also not detected any volcanic ash in the plume during this period, using satellite-based monitoring.

Based on this information, GNS has downgraded the Volcanic Alert Level to 2 (moderate to heightened unrest) and the Aviation Colour Code to Yellow.

“These levels acknowledge the current volcanic activity, but also reflect the uncertainty due to the lack of real-time monitoring data from the island,” said GNS volcanologist Oliver Lamb. “Volcanic activity could escalate with little or no warning. Further sudden, more explosive events could affect the crater floor and surrounding area.”

GNS Science’s Volcano Monitoring Group and the National Geohazards Monitoring Centre will continue to monitor Whakaari/White Island closely for any changes.

“Without sensors on the island, our monitoring relies on remote cameras, satellite imagery, and periodic observation and gas flights,” Lamb added.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
