Ohope and Whakatāne fire crews alongside St John and a Greenlea Rescue Helicopter completed a tough rescue in Ōhope yesterday afternoon.
St John were first alerted around 3.15pm to a person who had fallen down an escarpment. Two ambulances, a St John manager unit the Greenlea Rescue Helicopter responded to the scene.
One fire crew from Ōhope and two crews from Whakatāne arrived shortly after.
A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said, the person was found 60 to 70m down the escarpment.
The spokesperson said, the person was picked up by the helicopter with a winch.
The person was then flown to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition.
