Scott Davies of Pāpāmoa has officially been named New Zealand’s top building apprentice after winning the 2025 NZCB Apprentice Challenge national final in Hamilton.

The 20-year-old, apprenticed to Gudsell Builders, impressed judges with his skill and precision, earning the Ken Read Memorial Trophy and a $10,000 Mitre 10 Trade prize pack.

He had earlier won the Tauranga regional heat, making this his third major title – alongside being named Tauranga’s Master Builder Apprentice of the Year.

Speaking to 1XX News in April after his regional win, Davies dedicated his success to his late grandfather: “He was the one who taught me from a very young age the joys of hands-on practical work,” he said.

Now with the national title under his belt, Davies has been recognised as one of the industry’s most promising up-and-comers. He’s been working in carpentry for three and a half years, with three of those as an apprentice through BCITO (Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation).

He says the national recognition marks a major milestone in his journey. "Winning this award would help my future in the trades" added Davies.
