Eastern Bay shoppers continue to feel the pinch at the supermarket as the annual food price increase remains at a 13 year high.
Stats NZ announced yesterday, food prices were 8.3% higher last month compared with September last year. The annual increase was also 8.3% in August 2022, the highest since July 2009.
Grocery food was the largest contributor to the monthly movement, up 7.7% compared to September last year.
"Increasing prices for yoghurt, two-minute noodles, and tomato-based pasta sauce were the largest drivers within grocery food." Consumer Prices Manager, Katrina Dewbery says.
Fruit and vegetables were noted as the second-largest contributor to the annual movement, having increased 16% since September last year.
Other categories include restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices which increased by 6.9%, meat, poultry, and fish prices up 6.7% and non-alcoholic beverage prices up 4.8%.
