Urgent Stabilisation Work on Ōhope Beach

Stabilisation works will be taking place on Thursday IMAGE: Whakatāne District Council

Whakatāne District Council said the mouth of Maraetōtara Stream will be undergoing urgent stabilisation works on Thursday.

Maraetōtara Stream mouth will under go stabilisation works following recent changes to the stream channel which caused erosion of the sand dunes.

Whakatāne District Council said the dunes protect nearby homes and are vital for wildlife so work is needed to realign the stream and to prevent further damage.

The work will begin early Thursday morning around low tide and is expected to be complete by the end of Friday.

Machines will be operating above the high tide mark, moving sand from the western side of the stream to rebuild the eroding eastern side.

It said the stream will be redirected away from the eroding dune.

Beach users have been warned to stay below the high tide mark and keep clear of machinery.

We’re committed to keeping the Eastern Bay informed with accurate, timely coverage.
