A heavy rain warning is in place for the Bay of Plenty, west of Whakatāne, including Rotorua, from 11pm Tuesday, April 7, until 9pm on Wednesday, April 8.
MetService said 100 to 140mm of rain can be expected, especially inland, with downpours of 25 to 40 mm/h.
Thunderstorms are possible on Wednesday right across the Bay of Plenty.
It said surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions are possible.

From 6am on Wednesday until 11am on Thursday, April 9, another heavy rain watch will be in place for the Bay of Plenty, about and east of Whakatāne.
There is a moderate chance of upgrading to a warning, with periods of heavy rain approaching warning criteria.
MetService urges the community to clear drains and gutters in preparation for heavy rain.
