Whakatāne District Council have advised of a water mains break at the Tāneatua water reservoir, where the townships water is stored.
The council said their team is working to fix the issue urgently.
"We're hoping to have this all sorted today, but at this stage we don’t have a confirmed timeframe."
It said Tāneatua will likely be without water until the repairs are completed.
"This means your loos won't flush, and you won't have fresh drinking water for a while."
A water tanker will be parked outside Tāneatua School for those who need to take water home, however you must bring your own container or bucket.
Tāneatua School said it will be closing due to the shut down.
It said Kaiako are contacting whānau and the students will be released if someone is at home to receive them or parents come to collect them.
"We are organising buses as soon as we confirm all whānau know," the kura said.
The school will be open tomorrow, at this stage.
